The Cataplana is an ancient type of pressure cooker which is widely used in Portugal to create the most wonderful meals. The model shown is 24cm and is suitable for 2/3 persons.
The cataplana is ideal for steaming mussels or clams and you can also cook fish, meat, rice, pasta or vegetable dishes in it. As all the ingredients are placed inside the cataplana which is then sealed the food cooks quicker and without losing any of the flavour or taste.
Foods cook quickly in their own natural juices and flavours can be enhanced with herbs and spices resulting in the most memorable of meals. Traditionally the cataplana is brought to the table and the food served from it direct onto the plates, thus reducing the washing up.
The Cataplana can be used on the burner rings of conventional gas and electric cookers (not induction), inside the oven, on the barbeque or even in the embers of an open fire.
This makes the Cataplana a most versatile cooking utensil furthermore the top lid can be detached from the bottom turning it into a wok style dish for stove top cooking
